Hi, my name is Rachel, and I'm a cancer survivor! This March, my family and I celebrated my official cure from leukemia. It has been a long battle, and I'd like to share my story with you.
In 1999 at age 4, I was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. It was terrifying for my family and me. For over two years, there were lots of needle pokes, spinal taps and chemo treatments. All of my hair fell out two different times. I was one sick kid, and I missed a ton of school.
It is funny, though – most of my memories are not of all the bad things that came with cancer. I try to remember all the good things, like "slumber parties" in my hospital room with my family, root beer floats at midnight with my nurses, racing down the hospital hallways in a "power-wheels jeep" with my sister and brother and, most of all, making friends with other kids with cancer.
It has been seven years since my diagnosis, and now I'm driven to give back in any way I can. Whether it is raising money for cancer research or helping children fight cancer, it feels so good to give back. My doctor says a cure for cancer in kids will happen in my lifetime. I'd like to be a part of making that come true.
Thank you, Hyundai, for starting the Hope On Wheels tour and helping to shine the light on childhood cancer. Together, we can all make a difference in the world.
