Sarah was diagnosed with melanoma cancer several months before her third birthday. She is one of the youngest children to be diagnosed with this cancer and is in stage III, meaning that the cancer was deep and in one of her lymph nodes. It was discovered because she had a growth on her chin that remained over time. It looked like a harmless mole but when biopsied by several doctors, it was determined to be malignant melanoma – one of the worst skin cancers to get because it tends to attack the brain and the liver.
Sarah had surgery to remove the melanoma on her chin and was given chemotherapy and biotherapy, which started in December 2005 and will continue through December 2006. Fortunately, she has handled the treatments very well. Her CAT scans are clear of cancer, and she has very few side effects from the medicine. Sarah is doing very well, and we anticipate a full recovery.
