In September 2010, Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai dealers raised national awareness about childhood cancer and donated $6.8 million to children's hospitals and other non-profit organizations. The funds – distributed in the form of $100,000 'Hope Grants' – were applied to childhood cancer research projects, survivorship programs and other resources intended to improve quality of life for children with cancer.
On September 26, Hope on Wheels held their Celebration of Life event at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles to award three Hope Grants including Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. The grant will fund research about targeting nanoparticles to treat aggressive and often fatal bone and soft tissue cancers.
When they entered the event, children were encouraged to sign their names and leave a hand print on the gigantic Hope on Wheels banner that adorned the entrance. Then they went on to enjoy activities such as carnival games, face painting, arts and crafts, interactive arcade games and entertainment from a lively disc jockey and clowns making balloon animals, magicians and vocalists.
During last year’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we visited each of our Hope Grant recipients to present their grants and learn more about the important work they are doing. The following videos capture these stories, along with the experiences of the children and families that are fighting childhood cancer across the U.S.
