Dr. Schultz's current research focuses on establishment of the International Ovarian Stromal Tumor Registry for children, adolescents and young adults with Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors, juvenile granulosa cell tumors and gynandroblastoma. These uncommon tumors require a specialized clinical approach, however, there are few studies of etiology, pathophysiology or optimal treatment. As in many rare tumors, research efforts are limited by sample size and the lack of funds available for rare tumor research. Nonetheless, rare cancer projects have led to breakthrough discoveries with powerful implications for cancer treatment in general.
